Difference Between SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA

HANA and S/4HANA appear side by side in course names, job postings and interview questions, and many people starting out in SAP assume they are the same thing, or that one is simply a newer version of the other. They are neither. They are two different products that work together.
The short version: SAP HANA is a database. SAP S/4HANA is the business software, the ERP system, that runs on top of it. This guide explains each in plain language, clears up the terms that cause most of the confusion, and shows what the difference means for your career and your interviews.
The short answer: a database and an application
A simple way to picture it: HANA is the engine and S/4HANA is the car. The engine provides the power, but nobody drives an engine to work. The car is what people actually use, and this particular car only runs with this engine. The engine, on the other hand, is fitted to other vehicles too.
In SAP terms, HANA stores and processes the data. S/4HANA is where an accountant posts an invoice, a buyer creates a purchase order or a planner runs MRP. Business users work in S/4HANA every day; HANA works underneath, mostly unseen.
What is SAP HANA?
SAP HANA is a database management system that SAP introduced in 2010. Its defining feature is that it keeps data in memory (RAM) instead of reading it from disk, and stores most of it in columns rather than rows. That makes it fast both at recording transactions and at analysing large volumes of data.
Before HANA, companies usually needed two kinds of systems: one to run daily transactions, and a separate data warehouse, loaded overnight, for reporting. HANA is fast enough to do both on the same live data.
HANA is a platform in its own right, not just a part of S/4HANA. It also runs SAP BW/4HANA (SAP’s data warehouse), SAP Business One for smaller companies, and custom or non-SAP applications. It is available on premise and as a managed cloud service, SAP HANA Cloud. The name originally stood for High-Performance Analytic Appliance; today SAP uses HANA simply as a product name.
What is SAP S/4HANA?
SAP S/4HANA is SAP’s ERP system: the business software companies use to run finance, procurement, sales, production, inventory, maintenance and more in one integrated system. It was launched in 2015 as the successor to SAP ECC, and the name stands for SAP Business Suite 4 SAP HANA.
Because it was built for HANA, S/4HANA runs only on the HANA database. That was a deliberate break: SAP redesigned the application to use in-memory speed instead of working around slow disks. We explain the product itself in more detail in What Is SAP S/4HANA?
SAP HANA vs SAP S/4HANA: the key differences
- What it is: HANA is an in-memory database platform. S/4HANA is an ERP business application.
- What it does: HANA stores, processes and calculates data. S/4HANA runs business processes such as procure to pay, order to cash and record to report.
- Who works with it: business users rarely see HANA; database administrators, Basis consultants and developers look after it. S/4HANA is used every day by accountants, buyers, sales teams and planners, and set up by functional consultants.
- What runs on it: HANA runs many applications, from S/4HANA and BW/4HANA to custom and non-SAP software. S/4HANA runs on one database only: HANA.
- What it replaced: HANA takes the place of traditional disk-based databases such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and IBM Db2 underneath SAP systems. S/4HANA replaces SAP ECC as SAP’s ERP.
- Launched: HANA in 2010, S/4HANA in 2015.
- Skills involved: HANA work means database administration, data modelling and SQL. S/4HANA work means business process knowledge and module configuration, plus ABAP for developers.
Where most of the confusion comes from: Suite on HANA
Part of the mix-up has a historical cause. From 2013, before S/4HANA existed, SAP let companies move their existing ECC system onto the HANA database. This was called Suite on HANA. The database changed, but the application, with its old data model and screens, stayed largely the same.
So a company can truthfully say it runs SAP on HANA and still not be on S/4HANA. Running on HANA is about the database; being on S/4HANA is about the application. When a job posting or a project description mentions HANA, it is worth checking which of the two it means.
The same naming pattern appears elsewhere in SAP’s product list. SAP BW/4HANA, for example, is SAP’s data warehouse rebuilt for HANA, just as S/4HANA is its ERP rebuilt for HANA.
What changed when SAP rebuilt its ERP for HANA
Moving to S/4HANA is not just a database swap, and functional consultants notice the difference in their daily work. A few changes come up in almost every project and interview:
- Universal Journal: finance and controlling line items are stored together in one table (ACDOCA) instead of many separate ones, so FI and CO reconcile by design. This sits at the heart of SAP FICO on S/4HANA.
- Business Partner: customers and vendors are maintained through a single Business Partner object instead of separate customer and vendor master records.
- Simpler inventory data: material documents are stored in one table (MATDOC), and stock totals are calculated when needed instead of being stored separately, which matters in SAP MM.
- Fiori: a browser-based, role-based interface that works alongside the classic SAP GUI screens.
- Embedded analytics: reports run directly on live transaction data instead of a copy loaded into a separate warehouse.
These are S/4HANA changes that HANA made possible. That distinction, the application changed because the database allowed it, is exactly what interviewers want to hear.
What the difference means for your career
For most people starting an SAP career, the daily work happens in S/4HANA, not inside the HANA database.
- Functional consultants in modules such as SAP FICO, SAP MM and SAP SD configure and support S/4HANA business processes. They do not administer the database; knowing what it makes possible is enough.
- Basis consultants install and run SAP systems, including the HANA database underneath: backups, system replication, upgrades and performance. See SAP Basis.
- ABAP developers work in S/4HANA but write code that uses HANA’s strengths through CDS views, AMDP and code pushdown. That is what ABAP on HANA covers.
- HANA modelling and database specialists focus on the database itself, building data models and analytics for reporting.

Reading course names and job titles correctly
The same confusion shows up in training ads and job portals, so it helps to read the labels carefully:
- A course called “SAP HANA FICO” or “SAP FICO on HANA” should mean SAP FICO on S/4HANA, also called S/4HANA Finance. Before you enroll anywhere, check that the course is taught on an S/4HANA system and not on ECC.
- A job titled “SAP HANA Consultant” is usually a technical role: database administration, HANA modelling or Basis work.
- A job titled “SAP S/4HANA FICO Consultant” or “S/4HANA MM Consultant” is a functional role in that module.
When in doubt, read the responsibilities rather than the title. They tell you quickly whether the role is about the database or about business processes.
How to answer this question in an interview
“What is the difference between HANA and S/4HANA?” is a common opening question in SAP interviews, especially for freshers. A clear answer takes three or four sentences, for example:
“SAP HANA is an in-memory database, and SAP S/4HANA is SAP’s ERP application that runs on it. HANA can run many applications, but S/4HANA runs only on HANA. S/4HANA is not just ECC on a faster database: SAP redesigned the data model, for example with the Universal Journal in finance and the Business Partner for customers and vendors, and added the Fiori interface. A company that moved ECC onto HANA without converting, called Suite on HANA, runs on HANA but is not on S/4HANA.”
Then connect it to your own module. One example of what S/4HANA changed in your area shows that you understand the difference in practice, not just in theory. Our guide on explaining your SAP project in an interview covers the question that usually comes next.
Frequently asked questions
Is SAP HANA the same as SAP S/4HANA?
No. HANA is the database; S/4HANA is the ERP application that runs on it.
Can S/4HANA run on a database other than HANA?
No. S/4HANA runs only on SAP HANA. The older SAP ERP, ECC, could run on several databases, which is one of the clearest differences between the two generations.
Can HANA be used without S/4HANA?
Yes. HANA also runs SAP BW/4HANA, SAP Business One, custom applications and non-SAP software, on premise or as SAP HANA Cloud.
Do I need to learn HANA to become a functional consultant?
Not the database itself. Learn your module on S/4HANA and understand, at the level of this article, what HANA makes possible. Database administration belongs to Basis and technical roles.
The bottom line
HANA is the database; S/4HANA is the business application built on it. Remember that one runs underneath the other, that S/4HANA runs only on HANA while HANA runs much more besides, and that a company on HANA is not automatically on S/4HANA. For most careers the place to start is a module on S/4HANA: browse our SAP courses or read how long it takes to learn SAP.
